Vanuatu, officially known as the Republic of Vanuatu, is an island country comprising of further 13 principles and many other smaller islands located in the South Pacific Ocean. The islands extend north-south approximately 400 miles (650 km) in an irregular Y-shape. The Republic of Vanuatu appeared as an independent state in 1980 since the literal meaning of ‘Vanuatu’ implies ‘Our Land Forever’, is basically a parliamentary democracy with a written constitution, which declares that the “head of the Republic shall be known as the President and shall symbolise the unity of the nation.” Port-Vila holds the crucial position of largest city as well as main commercial spot being the capital of Vanuatu. The natives of Vanuatu, called as ni-Vanuatu, majorly belong to Melanesian population whereas Polynesian natives are also settled in some of the outlying islands along with other minorities. Bislama is the national language as well as one of the three official languages including English and French. Agriculture, tourism, offshore financial services, and raising cattle are deemed as four major resources for economy development. Subsistence agriculture has traditionally been the economic base of Vanuatu, together with an elaborate exchange network within and between islands.
